Brandon Smith (Redwoodtwig)
Zone 1 in the permaculture lexicon is the area visited daily, right outside the kitchen door. The area I call the kitchen garden is on the west side of the house and gets a blazing hot sun in the summer and fall afternoons.
In the spring and winter the prevailing winds from the westerly directions bring plenty of wet and cold air through here, though the large pine that I place in the front yard does provide some protection from the north.
The slope is gentle in the southern part of this area, dropping off more towards the north.
The soil is the typical deep loess of the place. when it rains, it holds the water for a long time.
The overall plan is basically for this to be where food for the table is grown.
