Snow Melt Patterns
Winter sunny area north of upper pond
the snow has melted off all along the bank area and up into the hollow I made in the center of this image. Temp never got above freezing on this day, but the snow melted off anyway.

West side of this pair of pines. Even though temp did not get above 20 up on the back deck, the snow did melt off in the places where the heat is collected by the growth there, and roots under? Perhaps due to large amount of compost stacked here, some kitchen scraps and mostly sweepings from around the area here.

Note that the forsythia clump is reatining the snow. Even though temp did not get above 20 up on the back deck, the snow did melt off in the places where the heat is collected by the growth there, and roots under?
Snow melt north end of east field

Snow melt in front of south deck.

snow melt in front of south wall of house
Quite a bit warmer back here, also protected from the north winds. Temp up at window height is usually 10 to 30 degrees warmer than in front of house.
snow melt south side of west deck

I think this snow unmelt pattern tells me that the forsythia casts a very dense shade since just the branches with no leaves have prevented snow melting on the north sides. Which means that inside the forsythia circle, only plants that like heavy shade will be happy. Of course, I've seen persimmons and black locust popup in here, they seem to be able to sprout anywhere.
