Read MoreThe permaculture zones are essentially a way to determine where to put the most human intervention. In a larger property, there would be a zone 5, but since I need to walk the fence line at least a couple times a year since there are neighbours living just the other side of the property lines, no zone 5, no true natural wilderness.
The three drainage areas split a bit south of the west edge of the house. The current real problem is that the eastern drainage area hooks around the house and soaks into the ground with total saturation, causing basement leakage. The current sitation there is exacerbated by the lack of a rain gutter on the porch, but even before that, total saturation rainfall led to leaks in basement.

Coming from the north, toward Jeff City
It loos like there's a hill there, but in fact it's just taller trees.
Coming from the south, headed north toward Columbia
There's a good sized golf course to the south, and as we get closer to the property we can see the golf course's expensive housing development that borders the property to the south.
Aerial view from the west shows the forest as a higher point than around it, but that's the tree height doing it. Occaisional golf balls show up in the woods, though from the layout of the golf course, must be pretty wild shots. In any case, lots of chunks of woodland to the west of the property, going downhill toward the Mirssouri river bottoms.
