I'd never seen this before, in fact I have seen very few MTV productions...
The visual impact of the red slipper in the David Bowie music video reminded me right away of the Red Balloon, but as I watched the visual story unfold, something about Bowie's composition and camera work brought to mind Orson Welles Citizen Kane. Of course the words in the song and the visual story line of Bowie's Let's Dance video are almost diametrically opposite in sentiment from Citizen Kane.
Actually, not really. At one point in the interview, Orson Welles explains that there was in fact an intent to make social criticism of the greed he saw in our country back then. Very similar to the social criticism Bowie is making in his song.
